Hi all! It’s time for another review on InsideTheBox, today we have the new LittleBigPlanet: Karting developed by United Front games, developers of ModNation Racers. The game is in LittleBigPlanet style in almost every way, but, what are the core mechanics like: is it a good racer? Read on to find out….

LittleBigPlanet Karting comes from the developers of the ModNation racers series, United Front Games. It is essentially an upgraded version of ModNation racers, but given a complete LittleBigPlanet lick of paint. Everything within the game matches the style of LittleBigPlanet, the UI, the popit, the level creation, the story level presentation – many things from the series are present in this title.

The story levels are designed beautifully, and you can see a lot of time and effort has been put into making each level look and feel unique, colourful, fun and entertaining. Stickers, materials and objects in the LBP universe appear in Karting and most of the items available to use are from previous LittleBigPlanet games.

The game allows you to dress up Sackboy in costumes, and, all costumes, past and future are available in LittleBigPlanet 2, LittleBigPlanet Vita or LittleBigPlanet Karting, so buy any costume once and get it in three games (LBP1 costumes will also be carried forward). Stickers and decorations also make a return for track or pod decoration.

You can also customise your karts, changing their look, suspension, wheels and other attributes of the vehicle. United Front has done an excellent job in bringing the LittleBigPlanet style to life in LittleBigPlanet Karting – the game has absolutely no resemblance to the ModNation Racers on which it is based – it feels like an authentic LBP offering!

The level editor is quite powerful, and allows you to create track with just about any style and secrets you can think of. The presentation and access to tools is not limited, there are quite a lot of things you can use to enhance, customise and create your own racing tracks with: there is no shortage of resources.

Then, of course, levels can be published online to allow others to experience your creation, and, in turn, you can access and experience theirs. The tracks available online are already beginning to jump, with more and more being published for you to pursue at your leisure.

Also available in the game are VERSUS levels in which you can bring along your friends to play alongside you in races. These are both accessible in the story mode and creatable in creative mode. You can also find these published online by other players. Co-operative play can be very fun in Karting, and online chat through mics is also supported within the game.

So, to wrap up the review, should you buy LittleBigPlanet Karting? Well, if you are a fan of racers and/or a fan of LittleBigPlanet – definitely purchase this title! It is a huge step up from ModNation Racers and is even more enjoyable to play with friends. Fans of the LittleBigPlanet art style will love Karting and hardcore & casual racing fans will also enjoy the game.
